The Melbourne Jazz Festival starts tomorrow, May 3, and runs over this weekend, as well as the following one. I'm flying to Melbourne on Friday morning to take in a few days of music, and hopefully catch up with some of the artists to grab some interviews and such for my radio show. I'll be back in Sydney on Sunday afternoon in time to get to the studio for Sunday night's show. |

The empire is about to remodel its music room. This means that it will be closing its doors shortly, for perhaps a period of up to 6 months.
Along with the loss of this venue, this means that we'll be losing two regular jam sessions: the Wednesday night jams, run by Jim Finn and Al Britton, and the end of month Sydney Blues Society jams.
This Saunday, April 29, marks the final SBS jam in its current guise, and we're waiting to hear where it's going to be moved to.
I understand that the Wednesday jam may continue up to May 9. Again, we're waiting to see where it will be held.

New Orleans is one of my favourite cities in the world. The music, the food, the people, the music, the buildings, the culture ...
And did I mention the music?
It's not your typical American city. The influences of the different cultures are readily apparent, and, of course, it's the birthplace of jazz.
Every year, over the last weekend of April and the first weekend of May, they hold the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Two weekends of music of the highest calibre, from musicians who truly know their chops. One of the great things about the festival is that the music selection presents itself as a veritable smorgasboard of music, with artists and styles from well beyond what most would consider to be the typical jazz realm.
For instance, last year guests included Paul Simon and Bruce Springsteen. This year's lineup includes Rod Stewart, ZZ-Top snd Percy Sledge!
In recognition of the jazzfest, the people, and the musicians, for the two Sundays that span the jazzfest I'll be playing music of, from, and by the musicians who are appearing at this year's festival, as well as those who may have appeared in prior years. |
